✿ NEW MASCULINITIES
Every Second Wednesday at The Stacks Coffeehouse in North Portland
New Masculinities Group has been meeting monthly since January 2017, encouraging men in Portland, OR to critically examine gender, sexuality, and masculinity, through an intersectional feminist perspective. Men of different backgrounds and ideological leanings are welcome, but we are unapologetic in our support of reproductive justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and antifascist poltics.
We base our conversations on the most pressing issues affecting the people in our lives, while simultaneously learning to explore our own experience as men in a patriarchal world. It is our goal to create a space that is vulnerable and safe enough to allow men to engage in the intimate and honest conversations we are rarely encouraged to have, yet still challenges us to confront our complicity in oppressive structures and behaviors.
We’ve explored a variety of formats in the years since our group began, but have recently returned to monthly in-person meetings. The current format is meant to be accessible, requiring no prior knowledge or readings. We provide a discussion topics and a series of questions to inspire contemplation. After introductions and initial discussion, we take time to write, journal, and even draw through our thoughts, then come together to share our reflections.
In the group and elsewhere in our lives, we attempt to live with humility, accountability, and a will to change.
